Power Struggles:
What To Do When A Student Says "Make Me!"

Proactive, Positive, and Powerful Strategies for working through conflicts with students who are disruptive, disrespectful, and disengaged

It is inevitable: weather, taxes, and power struggles with students. Often difficult to resolve, these conflicts take valuable instructional time away from other students, disrupt the classroom climate, and are emotionally draining for everyone involved.

During this interactive and fun seminar we will:

  • Explore our assumptions about why adult-student power struggles occur.
  • Learn why threats and punishments rarely resolve the problem.
  • Discover the underlying reasons why students engage adults in this unproductive and self-defeating behavior.
  • Discuss the reasons why adults choose responses that escalate the struggle.
  • Learn multiple strategies for avoiding power struggles while keeping the students engaged in learning.
  • Learn multiple strategies for de-escalating and productively resolving the conflict.
  • Apply this information to a student you are working with and develop a "take home" strategy to use during the next power struggle.
  • Please note: this seminar will not teach physical restraint techniques.
